About me
Helen Watkins BSc RGN PGCE CELTA based in Poole, UK
I have been a registered nurse for more than 30 years, including experience in General Medicine, Oncology and Elderly Care. During this time I held posts which included Ward Sister and Specialist Nurse. From 2008 - 2018 I taught clinical skills in an NHS hospital, and completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Education in 2011 to be registered as a nurse teacher. You can check my professional qualifications here.
I have completed the CELTA qualification (Certificate in Teaching English Language to Adults). This is the most highly recognised initial English teaching certificate worldwide, awarded by the University of Cambridge.
I have Preliminary Provider Status with www.occupationalenglishtest.org. This means that I have gained the skills and knowledge to provide high quality OET preparation courses based on best practice and detailed knowledge of the test requirements.
With my husband Chris, I have been a host family for more than 40 international students since 2012, helping them to improve their English conversation, vocabulary and grammar.
Over the last 10 years I have spent an increasing amount of time helping nurses to understand the maths skills required to calculate medicine doses. I have taught new simpler strategies to a considerable number of nurses who initially said 'I'm rubbish at maths', and afterwards were able to demonstrate their new found confidence. I am now planning to write an interactive book on the subject.
